Physician Fellowship

The Providence Health Care 2021/22 Physician Ethics Fellowship is an 8-month fellowship administered by Ethics Services at Providence Health Care (PHC).

Inspired by the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, PHC is a Catholic health care community dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of those served through compassionate care, teaching and research. In keeping with our mission statement, this fellowship will provide a unique opportunity to engage in ethics work not only applying conventional health ethics principles, but also those elements uniquely relevant within a Catholic health care community. This unique context includes the study of various Catholic health ethics principles and the Health Ethics Guide.

This fellowship provides a PHC physician the opportunity for hands-on experience and training in clinical and organizational ethics within a faith-based environment. It includes mentorship, a seminar series with formal instruction, supervised practical training in ethics consultation in health care settings, and ethics teaching and engagement opportunities. Later parts of the fellowship can be tailored to the individual's clinical and research interests.

PHC Ethics Services also supports a Clinical Ethics Fellowship program. In 2021-22, the Physician Ethics Fellowship may overlap with the Clinical Ethics Fellowship, which offers a possible opportunity for shared learning experience. All Fellowships are offered as learning opportunities so the stipend provided is approximately $27/hour. Physicians would, on average, participate a minimum of 4 hours a week in the fellowship but would have flexibility to extend these hours to 7.5 hours per week depending on demands of projects and fellow interest.

Applications for the PHC Physician Ethics Fellowship are now open.
